What’s the Difference Between WWE Championship and Universal Championship?

    By Coder

    Wrestling Blogs

When it comes to professional wrestling, two of the most prestigious titles are the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship. While both belts represent the highest honor in their respective brands, there are key differences between them that make each championship unique. Let’s dive into what sets these titles apart.

    The WWE Championship

The WWE Championship is the oldest and most renowned title in professional wrestling. It dates back to 1963 when it was known as the WWWF (World Wide Wrestling Federation) World Heavyweight Championship. Today, it is exclusively defended on the Raw brand.

    History:

The WWE Championship has a rich history filled with legendary champions such as Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, John Cena, and more. These Superstars have carried the company on their shoulders and left an indelible mark on the industry.

    Design:

The design of the WWE Championship has evolved over time. Currently, it features a large rectangular-shaped center plate with intricate detailing and a red background. The belt itself is made of leather and adorned with gold plating.

    Qualification:

    • To challenge for the WWE Championship, a Superstar must earn an opportunity by showcasing their skills and climbing up the ranks through wins in matches or tournaments.
    • Additionally, there are special events like Royal Rumble or Money in the Bank where winners receive title shots at their choosing.

    The Universal Championship

The Universal Championship was introduced in 2016 as a counterpart to the WWE Championship. It represents excellence on SmackDown Live (and previously on Raw before brand separation). This title was created to ensure that both brands had equal representation at the top.

Being a relatively new championship, the Universal Championship doesn’t have as long of a history as the WWE Championship. However, it has already established its own legacy with notable champions like Finn Bálor, Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and more.

The Universal Championship has a unique and distinct design. It features a large rectangular-shaped center plate with a blue background and intricate detailing. The belt is also made of leather and adorned with gold plating.

    • Similar to the WWE Championship, Superstars earn opportunities to challenge for the Universal Championship by proving themselves through victories in matches or winning events like the Royal Rumble or Money in the Bank.

    In Conclusion

In summary, while both championships represent excellence in professional wrestling, they have their own distinct histories, designs, and brand affiliations. The WWE Championship is exclusive to Raw and holds a longer lineage dating back to 1963. On the other hand, the Universal Championship represents SmackDown Live (and previously Raw) and was created to ensure equal representation between brands.

Whether it’s contending for one of these titles or holding them high above their heads in victory, Superstars aspire to etch their names into wrestling history by capturing either the WWE Championship or the Universal Championship.
